The Data Protection Act 1998 requires you securely destroy your data!

"Data must be securely deleted before the electronic devices on which it is stored are destroyed or recycled" - Alastair Barter, Senior Policy Officer at the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), source ADISA issue 1 April 2012.

  • Data destruction should be performed using an approved method of data destruction.
  • Data destruction should be performed using approved data destruction software or devices.
  • Evidence of data destruction and certification should be recorded for traceability.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) enforce the Data Protection Act 1998 and as such have the authority to impose fines of up to £500,000 for serious instances of data loss.
